How Matria reads history

Matria studies women’s lives and work without treating them as a single story. We attend to race, caste, class, disability, sexuality, empire and the institutions that enable or constrain action. Historical importance does not make every action admirable.

Three kinds of connection

A theme groups records. An editorial comparison brings works into conversation. A documented relationship requires a source and a passage locator. Shared themes and dates do not prove influence.

What a source label means

Strong, Moderate, Emerging and Mixed concern the evidence within its stated scope. Traditional and Cultural identify situated knowledge systems; they are not medical recommendations. Bibliographic records, verified passages and permission to reproduce are separate matters.

Our present limits

Entries without sufficient sources cannot supply readings. We do not present uncleared text as an authenticated quotation. Community-specific and restricted cultural material requires appropriate review.

Keep public knowledge accessible

Public profiles, sources and three collections are free. Membership supports guided reading and personal tools. Readers retain access to existing private notes and can export or delete them when membership ends.

Corrections

Contact Matria with the record title, the claim at issue and a source or edition where possible. Suggestions require review before entering the archive.
